Lot Footnotes
Note: Portrait medallions by Wedgwood are more commonly recognised in black basalt and jasperware, with these cold-painted terracotta examples being a more cost-effective alternative, and indeed a rarer survival. The collection presented is a selection from multiple series of portraits produced in the late 18th century. The majority are contemporaneous portraits of noteworthy individuals, alongside imagined portraits of historical figures such as William the Conqueror, and portraits produced for private circulation only, such as that of Rev. William Willet, a Unitarian reverend, philosopher, amateur scientist, and brother-in-law of Josiah Wedgwood.
