Description

Mordechai Arieli,
Polish/Israeli 1909-1993 -

Figures in Safed;

oil on canvas, signed in Hebrew lower right, 52 x 66 cm

Provenance:
Bonhams, London, Israeli Art & Judica, 29th February 2012, lot 76

Note:
Arieli was born in Poland but studied in Paris in the 1930s. He was one of an influential group of émigré artists that developed a specifically Israeli language of modern painting from the 1920s onwards, alongside Nachum Gutman and Shimshon Holzman. The colours and spontaneous handling of this work evoke the sound and feel of the city of Safed in northern Israel.
