Lot 148

Description

Richard Dodd Widdas,
British 1826-1885-

The Highwaymen;

oil on canvas, signed and dated 'R. D. Widdas / 1884.' (lower right), 40 x 64.2 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Sotheby's, Chester, 15 January 1987, lot 3215.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Widdas lived and worked in Hull, which surely inspired his maritime scenes, some of which are
held at the Hull Maritime Museum and Ferens Art Gallery. Nevertheless, Widdas's preferred subject was undoubtedly that of coaching scenes, allowing him to exhibit his skill in the depiction of horses in various states of motion.

The present work is a particularly dramatic example of the subject, illustrating the danger of travelling by coach under the threat of the highwayman, a figure which has long been romanticised and almost mythologised. Indeed, Widdas's scene places the bandits as the central figures in the action, establishing an affinity and sympathy between the highwaymen and the viewer, whilst their victims form an indistinct and undefined mass towards the background.
