Lot 171

Description

Louise Ellen Perman,
Scottish 1854-1921-

Still life with white roses in a vase;

oil on canvas, signed 'L.E. Perman' (lower right), bears two old inscribed labels on the reverse of the frame, one with the artist's name and address, the other inscribed '68 / Thos. H. Miller Esq. / [?] Bute Garden', 51.3 x 61.4 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Perman worked principally as a flower-painter with floral still compositions typical of her oeuvre. Her paintings often feature bright flowers, generally roses, set against a dark background, with her loose application of paint effectively emphasising the geometric forms of the flowers and their foliage.
