Description
Thomas Rowlandson,
British 1756-1827-
A wooded landscape with a cottage, figures and a cart;
pencil, pen and reddish-brown ink and wash on paper, 14.3 x 23.3 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 11 June 1968, lot 54 'A Cottage in a wood' (£157.10s).
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work is characteristic of Rowlandson's drawings, depicting rustic figures in a simple, rural setting. The artist conveys a sense of romantic idyll, with a large family of varying ages accompanied by an attentive dog, bidding farewell to figures on a carriage. Nevertheless, Rowlandson manages to imbue the scene with a sense of bustle and activity, revealing a debt to the work, perhaps, of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525/30-1569).
