Description

Alan Davie CBE RA HRSW,
Scottish 1920-2014-

Magic Picture, No.69, 1977;

oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated on the reverse, 76.2x101.6cm (unframed) (ARR)

Provenance: Ado Gallery Belgium; Gimpel Fils, London, where acquired by the present owner.

Exhibition: Gimpel and Hanover Gallery, Zurich 3rd June to 22nd June 1978 No.21

Note: Alan Davie was a Scottish twentieth-century artist, who studied at Edinburgh College of Art. Davie promoted the concept of the act of painting itself as a highly spiritual process, with his finished artworks often heavily laden with symbolism. His style and manner of painting was heavily influenced by contemporaries such as Jackson Pollock, Paul Klee and Joan Miró, with Davie embracing the spontaneous and free application of paint as a tool for the expression of the artists subconscious. This approach is clearly evident in the surreal and enigmatic subject-matter of this piece, which is from a period in the 1970s of particular artistic and musical creativity in the artists life.

Works by Davie are owned by internationally renowned institutions, including the Art Institute Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and the Tate Gallery, among others.
