A Rare Depiction of Venus & Cupid sells
for a record £45,000
Lot 804 March Quarterly Select Auction 2010
Research by our painting expert Luke Price, helped identify and sell this small unsigned Mannerist oil on slate depicting Venus and Cupid. Delivered to our salerooms on a normal valuation week day, the painting caught the eye and imagination of the paintings department. After extensive reserach it was identified and catalogued as Circle of Felice Rizzo (c.1540-1606), an artist more commonly known as Felice Brusasorci.
Surviving works on slate are a rare mdeium in any period, and this example proved to be in very good condition, to attract considerable interest on an International scale. Professional opinion considered this example to be an autograph work by this rarely seen Veronese painter who as a member of a prominent family of artists in Verona, received a number of large scale ecclesiastical commissions, but also produced small scale secular works for private clients, of which this was the best example to appear at auction in recent times.
Another example of an oil on slate by Brusasorci can be seen in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts entitled 'Dead Christ mourned by Angels'.
With considerable interst shown before the auction, including enquiries from Italy, the bidding opened at £10,000, eventually being sold for £45,000. This was a superb conclusion to the sale of this initially unknown little painting.
We are open for valuations Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.00pm and can be reached on 020 8761 2522 for further information.
