Introducing Michael Elston our new Books & Manuscripts specialist

Whether it is a sixteenth century leather-bound book or a first edition Ian
Fleming, the pleasure of finding a valuable book on the shelves of someone who had no idea what they have is one of the most pleasurable aspects of my job.

People are often truly surprised to realise that the books that have been
sitting on the shelves, neglected and unread for years, can be valuable. So
how do you know if you are staring at a goldmine on your bookshelves?

Like most aspects of the antiques business, knowing the answer to this
question is more of an art than a science. It is always worth seeking
advice if you are unsure; I have heard far too many times the phrase “If
only I had known several years ago I would not have thrown that out.”

Many types of book have value at auction, including English and Continental literature; the majority of value lies in first editions, but with certain works later editions can also be saleable. Natural history and travel books with coloured or tinted plates are also highly collectable and often extremely valuable. Children’s books, particularly in good condition, are highly sought after; common authors and illustrators to watch out for
include Beatrix Potter, Arthur Rackham and Kate Greenaway. Bibles are
another one to watch out for, particularly early ones. Perhaps the largest
sector though are modern first editions; found in most homes, early works by authors and those in good condition can be extremely valuable; take Ian Fleming, a first edition of Casino Royale can fetch up to £10,000 and Dick Francis’ Dead Cert £2000 at auction.

Whilst there is a lot out there of great value, there is also much that isn’t. If in any doubt or for advice on collecting or selling, whether a single
book or a whole library, please feel free to drop me a line.

Michael Elston is available for valuations of books, maps and manuscripts by e-mail, telephone, letter, or in person. He can be contacted on 020 8761 2522 or 07968 041 874 and at books@roseberys.co.uk

Rosebery’s next book sale will take place as part of the Quarterly Sale on 11th-13th September 2007 and will include a private collection of English literature, children’s books and maps and atlases. Consignments are welcome until 17th August.
