Medal Groups acheive high prices in our March 20th, 21st & 22nd Quarterly Antique Sale.......

lot 1402: Group of eleven awarded to Brigadier A.J.D Turner.
sold for £8800

The current high interest in military history and research into groups of attributable medals and awards was proven with the £8800 paid for a World War Two D.S.O and M.C group to Brigadier A.J.D.Turner who commanded the British rearguard at Dunkirk.

The importance of related literature when sold with medal groups and the effect of the internet was also proven in this sale. Unbeknown to Roseberys, executors who submitted these medals for sale had already disposed of what they had considered to be worthless personal papers and photographs of Turner that included military reports and other printed ephemera relating to his awards. These ended up at a market being bought by a collector, who when researching Turner on the internet found his medal group being offered for sale by Roseberys. He contacted the auctioneers and consequently the papers were offered as an additional lot realising £2600.

The same sale included a C.M.G & D.S.O group attributed to Brigadier J.A.Tanner along with other family related awards. Tanner was Chief Engineer of the British VII Corps in the Third Army serving at the Somme and at Arras in 1917 and this group realised £4200.

An interesting Naval George Medal gallantry group of four to Charles.G.Tanner R.N.V.R realised £4000, this being Britains second highest civilion award for gallantry or to military personnel for acts of heroism other than those under enemy fire. It was awarded for mine disposal work underwater at Woolwich on the river Thames from 6 Oct - 9 Nov 1942, the mines probably being of the aerial type dropped from aircraft.
