Consigned by a private vendor. Our Paintings specialist gives you his thoughts on this work:
This painting by Cecily Brown is an early work from her degree show at the Slade School in 1993. It gently points to the directions which her paintings are to take afterwards, especially noticeable in the fleshy treatment of the dog's head on the left. Here this is treated with a slight Bacon like influence. In her more recent works, the figures fill the picture space sometimes almost entirely, showing an influence more of de Kooning and Lovis Corinth. It also reveals a gentle almost whimsical aspect to the artist's work, to be seen in the way the standing figure is treated on the left and the girl holding the gun in the centre. It is uncommon painting and with very direct provenance, the picture sold well and above the estimate at £15,000 hammer price.

In the same auction Rosebery's were pleased to offer a rare and interesting collection of books consigned from a private deceased estate. Among the 78 lots offered, there were 7 lots of 'Book Of Hours' dating from the 15th & 16th centuries. Each book commanded great interest during the auction and sold in the room hotly contested by many internet & telephone bidders.
The highlight being lot 1859: A BOOK OF HOURS, UNKNOWN USE (UTRECHT), LATIN, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, (Flemish, late 15th early 16th century) selling for £22,000.
After holding auctions in a year of uncertain times in the market, Rosebery's were pleased to be offering a very varied and interesting collection of items, with a large proportion of the lots selling well above estimates.
We would like to thank all our clients past and present who have supported us and look forward to even better sales in 2008.
Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year.
