December Quarterly Fine Art Auction Shaping Up to be a Classic

The Rosebery's team is busily cataloguing for the December auction and the saleroom is heaving with perhaps the most exciting range of lots for some years.

If you would still like to consign lots for this auction the deadline is 23 November.

The catalogue will come out seven days before the auction (13 and 14 December) when all the lots will go on line too.

In the meantime, here is a selection of what's in store:

Lot 160: A George V five piece silver coffee/tea service by James Dixon and Son, Sheffield, c. 1917.  Of classical design with lionmask, acorn and lappet acanthus leaf motif decoration.   To include a tea kettle on matching stand with burner, coffee pot, tea pot, sugar and cream.

Estimate: £1,500 – £2,500

 

Lot 1016: A Chinese carved ivory figure of a monkey playing a sitar, 19th century, finely carved in the round.  14cm

Estimate: £800 – £1,200

 

Lot 170: A silver Freedom Casket for the Borough of Colne, Birmingham, c. 1926, maker’s mark “V&S”.  Of bombe rectangular shape with enamelled panels.  Presented to Christiana Hartley, the first female Mayor of Southport 1921-22 and the daughter of William Pickles Hartley of Hartley’s Jam fame.

Estimate: £1,500-£2,000

 

Lot 1058: A Persian 15 tile pictorial panel, Iran, 19th century.  Decorated in polychrome with central panel depicting a male figure on horseback wrestling a lion.  Total size approx 59cm high x 99cm wide.

Estimate: £3,000-£5,000

 

Lot 300: A Belle Epoque design, 9ct white gold, opal and diamond openwork necklace. Formed of four conjoined tied bows, with swag below. Inset all over with cabochon opals and diamonds.

Estimate: £500-£600

 

Lot 421: Frances Mary Hodgkins, New Zealand/British 1869-1947- Two Girls; watercolour and charcoal on buff, signed in pencil, 18.2x25.6cm. 

Estimate: £5,000-£8,000

 

Lot: 459: Dame Laura Knight DBE RA RWS British 1877-1970, "St Ives Harbour"; watercolour over pencil, signed and dated 1912, 48x33cm
